What Should You Share With ChatGPT and Claude
Tamra explains what is safe to share with ChatGPT and Claude, what to anonymize, and which privacy settings matter before you press send.

Tamra Says · AI privacy and security
The safest prompt is specific about the problem and vague about the identity.
ChatGPT and Claude can be useful for personal and professional work. The boundary is simple: share the context the model needs, not secrets, credentials, or traceable records.

Tamra's AI Privacy Cheat Sheet
A six-page visual guide to the traffic-light rule, privacy settings, and a starter AI-use policy for teams.
The short answer
Treat AI like a smart stranger
AI services are not public message boards. They are also not diaries, vaults, lawyers, doctors, or password managers. Your conversation may be stored, processed, reviewed in limited circumstances, connected to memory or tools, or affected by the settings and contract attached to your account.
Tamra's rule is easy to remember: be honest about the situation, vague about the identity, and never paste a secret.
Tamra's privacy check
Before you press send
Choose anything that describes the information you are about to share. This tool runs in your browser; it does not send or save your text.
Tamra says: probably fine
General questions, drafts, brainstorming, recipes, and anonymized situations are usually reasonable. Still check important answers before acting on them.
The mental model
Four different privacy questions
Storage
Is the chat, file, memory, or recording kept somewhere?
Training
Can the content be used to improve a future model?
Access
Who or what can read it: staff, connectors, shared links, or an attacker?
Action
Can an AI agent use the information to send, buy, change, or publish something?
These questions are related, but they are not interchangeable. Turning off training does not necessarily delete a chat. Deleting a chat does not necessarily remove a separate memory. Using a temporary mode does not protect data sent to a third-party connector.
Traffic light guide
What to share, anonymize, or keep out
| Level | Examples | Tamra's rule |
|---|---|---|
| GREEN | Recipes, brainstorming, drafts, general questions, anonymized scenarios | Share normally, then verify important answers. |
| YELLOW | Health symptoms, relationship problems, budgets, work conflicts, legal questions | Remove names, employers, addresses, account numbers, and unnecessary detail. |
| RED | Passwords, API keys, recovery phrases, ID numbers, full card numbers, confidential files | Keep it out. Use the real institution or an approved secure system. |
The swap trick works surprisingly well. Replace “my bank, Chase, account 4417” with “my bank.” Replace a coworker's name and employer with “my manager.” Replace an exact patient record with a fictional, generalized example. The answer often gets just as useful while the exposure drops sharply.
ChatGPT and Claude
The settings that matter most
Product labels change, so use the setting name as your anchor rather than relying on an old screenshot. In ChatGPT, review Improve the model for everyone, Memory, shared links, connected apps, and Temporary Chat. OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to legal and security exceptions, and Temporary Chat may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Read the current retention guidance.
In Claude, review Help improve Claude, Memory, Incognito chats, shared Projects, and connectors. Anthropic's consumer policy says users can choose whether new or resumed chats are used for model improvement; allowing that option can also bring a five-year retention period, while declining it keeps the usual 30-day period. Read Anthropic's policy update.
Neither product setting replaces account security. Turn on multi-factor authentication, use a unique password, remove unused connectors, review old shared links, and sign out of shared devices.
The developer door
Why APIs are different, but not automatically safe
OpenAI and Anthropic treat API traffic differently from consumer chat products, with business controls and retention options that can be much stricter. But the API is only one part of the path. A third-party application may store your prompt, your own logs may retain it, and a leaked API key can create both a data and billing incident.
- Never paste an API key into chat, a screenshot, or a public repository.
- Set spending limits and alerting.
- Map every downstream vendor that receives prompts or files.
- Use least-privilege access for connectors and agents.
- Log enough to investigate failures without creating an unnecessary copy of sensitive content.
Small business
A one-page rule beats a thousand warnings
If a team uses AI for customer, employee, legal, health, or financial work, do not rely on informal advice. Write a short policy that answers five questions: which tools are approved, what data is allowed, what must be anonymized, who owns access, and how incidents are reported.
Tamra's starter policy
Use approved business workspaces for company data. Never enter credentials, government IDs, payment-card data, or confidential client files into a personal account. Remove direct identifiers where they are not needed. Check connectors and shared links before use. Escalate anything regulated or contract-restricted to the data owner.
Business and enterprise plans can offer stronger contractual, administrative, and retention controls, but “business plan” is not a magic word. Confirm the actual terms, workspace configuration, access model, and regulatory obligations.
The 15-minute reset
Do these things today
- Turn on multi-factor authentication.
- Review model-improvement and memory settings.
- Delete old shared links and disconnect unused apps.
- Remove sensitive details from custom instructions and saved memories.
- Save the traffic-light rule somewhere your team will see it.
- Use Temporary or Incognito modes for one-off sensitive topics, while remembering their limits.
FAQ
Questions Tamra gets all the time
Is it safe to talk to AI about personal problems?
Usually, yes, if you remove names and identifying details. Use AI as a sounding board, not as a substitute for a doctor, lawyer, therapist, or financial professional.
Does turning off training delete my chats?
No. Training, chat history, memory, and retention are separate controls. Turning off model improvement does not automatically remove stored chats.
Is Temporary Chat completely private?
No. OpenAI says Temporary Chats stay out of history and are not used to improve models, but a copy may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. See OpenAI's current guidance.
Can I paste customer or patient data into ChatGPT or Claude?
Not into a personal consumer account. Use an approved business environment and confirm the contract, retention, access, and regulatory requirements before sending sensitive data.
Bottom line
Share context, not identity
AI is useful when it can understand the problem. It does not need every real name, account number, document header, or private secret to help you solve it. Start with the least sensitive version of the prompt, add detail only when it is necessary, and use an approved business environment when the stakes are higher.
Tamra's final check: If this conversation appeared with your name attached, would the consequences be acceptable? If not, rewrite it before you send.
